Scholastic has done it once again! I cannot say enough great things about the DVD series produced by Scholastic that integrates time tested and approved children's stories into visual masterpieces and allows children to read along with the video. I feel no guilt when my children engage in these educational and inspirational videos and always look forward to the opportunity to review the company's latest releases.

This fall I was given the opportunity to review a 3-DVD collection of 23 Award-Winning Stories that included Caldecott award winners such as Ezra Jack Keats’ The Snowy Day, Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ugly Duckling and Denise Fleming’s In the Small, Small Pond. As you can tell...impressed once again!

Bonding with My Son Thanks to Sock n Boots' Storytime

We have all heard and know that reading to our children, even at a young age, encourages learning, language development and a lifetime of reading enjoyment for our kids. But as I was reading about this book and iPad application series called Sock N Boots, something about the characters, the company's mission and the content referring to fueling a child's imagination and bonding with your child, really caught my attention.

I spoke to the company founder and creator, D.K. Smith, and he described the company's mission as "encouraging discussions between parent and child and creating a bonding experience between parent and child." The discussions that result from reading the book together will be about right-and-wrong and helping your child to overcome fears or social challenges such as being afraid of the dark, staying safe outside of the home and more. The morning after my review book arrived, I nestled down with my little guy and we had so much fun! The colorful artwork, charming characters and rhyming short stories kept his attention and even I had a good time reading the stories. What I love most is that Socks is always getting into trouble. This was me as a child. So under-stimulated, so curious...I meant no harm but always managed to cause chaos and interrupt everyone else! Thankfully, he has a friend called Boots who helps keep him out of trouble.

Mr. Smith, recommends that the readers (parent/teacher/friend) bring the story to life with lively narration, sharing and pointing to pictures and truly enjoying the experience alongside the child. I have to agree with this advice! Recently I started reading "Buzz Goes the Bee" which my 2 1/2 year old and it didn't matter what I was actually saying - as long as I enunciated it, shrugged my shoulders and intensely said, "The Bee Just Sat!" - he would laugh and giggle so hard with eyes wide open. I found the same thing to be true as I read Sock n Boots with him over the weekend so thank you for the reminder!

The hot news is that there is now a Sock n Boots iPad app too! There are lots of features including a choice of three lessons that you can listen to with Auto Play, choose to have the narrator read it out loud to you and your child or it will give you the option to read it to yourself and interact with the book by touching on items. A coloring book is also available that offers letters and numbers for coloring while the narrator spells out the color or number. The "Write Your Own Story" feature allows you to write words and record your own voice using the pre-existing illustrations. Itty Bitty Heart Beats Wins Over Mom's Heart with Life Lessons and Lots of Excitement from Two Year Old Son

It's not very often that my son will attach to a DVD more than his little worn out orange toddler pillow but just recently I was asked to review a new series called itty bitty HeartBeats™, a Kids First Award-winning animated/live-action web-based television series of musical adventures for girls and boys ages 2-6.

itty bitty HeartBeats emphasizes three core values:

· 1. Living a healthy, nutritious lifestyle

· 2. Having a healthy heart, both physically and emotionally

· 3. Teaching positive life lessons

I am just going to start out my review with the below picture of my son's face while watching the video. And this is not just one day, this is EVERY DAY!

Need I say more?!

The first thing I noticed (besides the huge smile) is that when he watched certain episodes he would get all "Lovey Dovey" with Mommy (awesome). He was sort of mellow and hugging me as if he was truly empathizing with the child in the video who didn't have the courage to ask the other children if she could join them in a soccer game. Or that he felt the relief when the boy figures out a lifelong way to stay connected to his friend that is moving away.

Then as we watched the movie each day he began to make me stand up and dance each time the Heartbeats would head to Heartland and the theme song would begin...and this is where the smile began and has not stopped since. Thank you so much for the opportunity to review. I hope it will available on TV soon as well!

Jim Gill Does it Again: Thanks for Making a Difference!

Jim Gill is a musician and author with unique credentials among children’s artists. Jim is a child development specialist, having completed his graduate studies in child development at the Erikson Institute of Chicago with a special emphasis on the study of play. For this reason, each of Jim’s recordings and books is created as an opportunity for playful interactions between a child and a caring adult.

Jim has won acclaim for bringing the same emphasis on family play to his live concerts. Anyone who has ever attended one of Jim’s family concerts knows that rather than performing for the children and parents, Jim leads them to sing and playtogether.

Scholastic Continues to Roll Out Award-Winning and Timely DVDs

Meryl Streep, Sarah Jessica Parker, Danny Glover Gracing Scholastic Movies: Enjoyable for Kids and Parents Too!

Two timely DVDs were recently released by Scholastic and as usual, each brought a level of learning to my son that thrilled me. Scholastic has continued to do me the honor of reviewing its educational and timeless treasures over the last few years and I thank them. We have enjoyed the DVDs and will continue to do so as he grows. If you are unfamiliar with the collection, it is a library of classic "Treasures" that allow you to read along on screen with your child as the story lines are captured vividly on the screen.

The latest two DVDs ruling our castle are The Language Learning Collection Featuring Jorge El Monito Ciclista (Curious George, Harry the Dirty Dog and more in Spanish), which was released during National Hispanic Heritage Month. This DVD contains 18 beautifully illustrated stories in English and Spanish. Studies have shown that second language learning not only improves a child's linguistic abilities, but their cognitive and creative abilities as well.

Second, released in late August in honor of the 10th Anniversary of 9/11, The Man Who Walked Between the Towers - one of the most memorable stories in the history of the World Trade Towers, Philippe Petit, a French man who walked a tightrope between the massive monuments in 1974.

The Perfect Snow Day Project!

Recently, my son has become obsessed with his movies and CDs. He is just determined to take each one out of the case – throw it to the side – and then open and shut the case. As a result, I cannot seem to ever locate our Lion King DVD first thing in the morning, or his favorite Michael Jackson CD after lunch. And when my son is ready to dance…oh boy had I better be prepared!

So I went on a search for a way to organize his movies and CDs without having to use the plastic cases since most are damaged now anyway. Brush Buddies: My Son's New Best Friend!

When my son FINALLY cut his first tooth at 14 months, I began my search for the best toothbrush to get him started on his Rite of Passage into the world of tooth-ownership and caring for them morning and night. The toothbrush needed to be engaging, fun, and of course, clean his teeth well.

I was recently sent a set of storybooks from Scholastic that included the three DVD collection of Halloween Stories and I have to say...my son was bewitched, entranced, completely engaged! I actually had a chance to make dinner for a change!

The collection includes 18 "slightly scary" stories for the Halloween season including A Very Brave Witch, The Teacher from the Black Lagoon and my favorite from childhood, Where the Wild Things Are (French and Spanish versions). The stories are narrated by Elle Fanning, Calista Flockheart among others.

A Letter to Carter's

Dear Carter's,

I have a request. Your specialty is baby and children's clothing. Your customers are parents. Usually...broke parents with little or no time for exchanges or re-shopping for the same item. If you specialize in one area, please do it to the best of your ability.

Over the last 15 months I have purchased, re-purchased and ebayed about half the things I purchase from you because they shrink the first time I wash them. I have tried cold water washes. I have tried low-air drying. I have even begun stretching them out after the wash and laying them out half-dry (which by the way, results in a crunchy cotton clothing item to put on my poor son's skin).

All you readers out there - what am I doing wrong? Do you have the same problem? Carter's - any solutions?

I need some help! I have tried everything and finally, after buying 18 month pajamas from Carter's last week for my son-which fit when I got home and didn't come near to fitting him after washing them (AND NOT DRYING THEM) - I had to send out a plea for help!

Our Family Earth Day Challenge - Stop Using Plastic Water Bottles!

My husband had a great idea this Earth Day - "I want to stop using water bottles and start using eco-canteens." Although we always refill our water bottles several times before recycling them, I had to agree that this would be a positive way for our family to do our part in the green movement.

I began my research online and started keeping my eyes out in the stores for bottles that I liked. I was overwhelmed to be honest, at the variety of options out there...and quite frankly, the cost of some of the hot sellers! Kid Basix was the first to send me a bottle and one for my son and they estimate that by switching to stainless steel water bottles, the average family will save approximately $2000 a year.

This post will continue to be updated as I try out each eco-bottle sent my way by our very kind companies wanting to support us in our Green Journey. I have personally gone with one from the Dollar Store if you can believe it! For $1 I found a basic, pop top, sippy plastic bottle that I love. And, if I leave it at the pool this summer, I will be able to replace it for just $1.

However, I also love the Safe Sporter by Kid Basix. I love the simple "pop-top" and it is better than my Dollar Store version because it keeps my water cool in the sun. The top also unscrews easily for a big gulp of water and to use to fill my son's bottle. Really love it! It holds 16 oz. of water and features a soft, pull spout. It is BPA and phthalate free. Very easy to clean due to the wide mouth opening. Best of all, it retails for about $15-$16 which is a bit more affordable than some of the others I found in stores. Here is also the SafeSippy which I will begin reviewing with my son as he learns to use it. He is 9 months old and will be transitioning to sippy cups and similar drinking items soon...stay tuned for my post on this one.

Keeping My Son's Attention While Teaching

We have been enjoying a new video called Dwizzle Dee by Cinema Werx and I would like to share it with my readers. It is an education DVD series created to entertain and educate preschool children. about colors, sizes, songs and to work their imagination. Sassy Baby Products Impresses Tough Cookie Mom Again!

I fell in Love with the Nap Nanny! 5 Mommy Stars!

Nap Nanny. Nap Nanny. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways!

For anyone that has had to transition their infant from their loving, warm bed to a crib, they understand the worry, and of course, the challenges of this huge step! I tried and tried to get my son to sleep in his crib but after 45 minutes, he would be wide awake and crying. He seemed scared to be laying in a wide open space instead of in the arms of his mother.

Then, I found Nap Nanny. And as the website states, Everybody Sleeps! The first night I put my son in the Nap Nanny, he slept 5 hours! It was like my life changed!

The product is described as "a groundbreaking product designed by a mother to improve infant sleep." Congratulations, Nap Nanny. It was truly "groundbreaking" in terms of transitioning my child to his crib. And although he still wakes at night, the length of time between his naps and nighttime sleep has significantly improved!

In addition to the comfort this large, cozy wedge provides, it also is said to help with acid reflux, which my son struggles with, due to the 30 degree incline. The harness makes me feel comfortable that he will remain safe as well when he is so far down the hall from me!

My Boy Got Sassy!

Thanks to Sassy Baby for sending me their latest learning and development product, the Crib and Floor Mirror “Inspire Vision”. This product stood up to a true product test from my son.

The timing was perfect – I received the product when my baby was three months old; just as he was developing his eye-hand coordination and was becoming interested in colorful objects in front of him.

Wanting him to reach out for things, I placed him on his Boppy pillow on his tummy then place the Sassy Mirror in front of him. The result: he instantly reached out for the bumble bee on the side of the frame! After scrunching the wings on the green ladybug, he went on to watch himself in the mirror, all the while, fascinated with that gorgeous baby in the mirror that was looking back at him. The product has continued to keep his interest and has certainly added to his tummy time. “A Candle Never Felt So Good”

I came across a genius product by Scandle Candle. It is a soy candle that melts into a body lotion to use during a massage. It can also be used as a lotion.

I was lucky enough to receive one from the company to review and have nothing but great things to say about it! And it was just what I needed after the Christmas season!

I let the soy candle burn for about 20 minutes then slowly poured the hot lotion it created onto my skin. Hot at first, it quickly relaxed me and soothed my muscles. The company sent me the Oatmeal Milk & Honey blend which is described as an aroma of hawthorne, creamy French vanilla, soy milk and nutty almond. The scent filled my entire large room full of the best fragrance that added to the relaxing experience.

The candles come in a large variety of scents ranging from Lavender to Gardenia (want to try!) and even Sex on the Beach.

How does it work?

The Scandle is a candle that burns two degrees above body temperature to produce a soothing oil that can be used for massage, manicures and pedicures, or as a daily moisturizer. On the Cuff : Simple and Smart Invention!

I always love writing about an entrepreneur that had an "ahhh haa!" moment and then takes the initiative to bring a solution-oriented product to market. The entrepreneur I am talking about today is Rana Bauer, creator of On the Cuff.

I have long been annoyed by the water that runs down my arms and into my bathrobe each night as I wash my face. Must Haves for April

Must Have: Schick® Intuition

Schick® Intuition has become my latest “must have”. I have enjoyed this product over the years but always felt that it was a luxury item rather than a necessity due to the cost. Now that I am pregnant and I am not as flexible as I once was in the shower, this has become a must have in my life for a quick and easy solution for a one-step shave. I suspect once my bundle of joy arrives, I will continue to rely on this product as a time-saving solution rather than just one of logistics!

The product is easy to use just by attaching a new refill (mine usually last about two weeks). The refill heads have three blades and are surrounded by what the company calls a “Skin Conditioning Solid.” It leaves a slight cream or conditioner on your leg to prepare your legs for the triple razors that follow for a nice, smooth shave. This all-in-one shaving product removes the need for applying shaving cream, dancing around the shower head to make sure it doesn’t rinse off, then picking your regular razor up and shaving.

My only negative feedback to the company is that they need to find a way to make the replacement heads reversible. After using 6-8 times I find that one side of the cream (the side that hits my leg) has disappeared. Not only does this mean I now need a replacement, but it bugs me every time I need to toss a half-full refill without using it. If the head could be reversed on the product, I could certainly use it for another week and feel a lot less guilty about the cost.

Refills are now available in Advanced Moisture with shea butter, Soothing Moisture with milk and honey, and Refreshing Moisture with cucumber melon scent. My refill of choice is the Sensitive Care that has aloe and vitamin E. I hope to find the milk and honey refill on my next shopping trip to try it out as well.

Runner Up Must Have: Gillette® Venus Breeze

The Venus Breeze by Gillette® also deserves a mention. It does what it promises, makes shaving a breeze. This razor has gel bars on either side of the razor removing the need for shaving gel as well. These do not last as long as the Intuition but are a bit more affordable. The bars flex too and I have found I don’t cut myself shaving because of this feature.
